Tank Spotting



   What is this?

  1. I thought that I knew it nearly right away. It's an Infantry Tank Mark II or aka the Matilda II.

  2. yeah a Matilda with 2 pound gun. Most likley in USe in North Africa around 1941 or early 42.

    This one is preserved downunder in the land of OZ. It probably served in what is now Indonesia. Also, the two-pounder equates to a 40 mm gun. Not so good in North Africa or Europe, but adequate against Japanese forces in the East.

    Matilda it is,"Queen of the desert".

    An excellent tank killer in the early war years thanks to heavy armour and the 2 pounder gun.

    Unfortunately it was too slow and nearly useless against anti-tank guns.

    It was also expensive and time consuming to produce.
    All in all a typical product of the intellectual deficit which gave rise to the British Army's armoured warfare doctrine.
