The Light Infantry Division: The Medium Range Radar




The Medium Range Radar shall be the only fire control radar for the Medium Range Multirole Missile in the British Army's Heavy Cavalry,Medium Infantry and Light Infantry Divisions and the Royal Navy's Royal Marine Division.


Within the Heavy Cavalry Division,the Medium Range Radar shall be mounted on the Churchwarden self propelled carriage,a variant of the Charger family of Cavalry Heavy ARmoured vehicles.



Within the Medium Infantry,Light Infantry and Royal Marine Divisions,the Medium Range Radar shall be mounted on the Towed Medium Range Multirole Missile Controller.


The Medium Range Radar (Land) shall be one of a family of eleven multi-function radars,including two Very Long Range Radars transmitting
 in the VHF or UHF bands (also known as B and C bands),three Long Range Radars,transmitting in either the L or S bands (also known as D,E and F bands),four Medium Range Radars,transmitting in either the C or X bands (also known as G,H and I bands) and two Short Range Radars,transmitting in either the X,Ku or Ka bands (also known as J and K bands),with Active Electronically Scanned Arrays (A.E.S.A) which are used to detect,track and identify all kinds of ships,boats,aeroplanes,helicopters,vehicles,guided missiles,ballistic projectiles,satellites and even submarine periscopes depending on the application.



The family of radars shall have common components,software,design and manufacturing facilities to permit secure,rapid and cost effective national design and manufacture.

The Very Long Range Radar (Sea) shall be mounted on Africa Class flying ships and Falklands Class frigates upgraded with the theatre level anti-aircraft,anti-ballistic missile and anti-satellite capabilities and have the largest,single,rotating antenna in the multifunction radar family,rotating roughly once every eight seconds,to support Furious combat aircraft as well as Medium,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun (or Gun Howitzer) and Ballistic Artillery Rocket capabilities

The Very Long Range Radar (Land) shall be towed by Heavy Protected Tractor vehicles and have a single large rotating antenna,rotating roughly once every eight seconds,to support Furious combat aircraft as well as Medium,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun (or Gun Howitzer) and Ballistic Artillery Rocket capabilities.

The Long Range Radar (Sea) shall be mounted on Africa Class flying ships and upgraded Falklands Class frigates and have a single large rotating antenna,rotating roughly once every four seconds,to support Furious combat aircraft as well as Medium,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun (or Gun Howitzer) and Ballistic Artillery Rocket capabilities.


The Long Range Radar (Land) shall be mounted on Corps' ARmoured Transport vehicles and have a single large rotating antenna,rotating roughly once every four seconds,to support 
Furious combat aircraft as well as Medium,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun (or Gun Howitzer) and Ballistic Artillery Rocket capabilities.


The Long Range Radar (Ae
roplane) shall be mounted on Perseus patrol aircraft and have two "bolt on" antennas,one on either side of the fuselage,to provide line of sight over the horizon support to Furious combat aircraft as well as Medium,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun,Ballistic Artillery Rocket capabilities.


The Medium Range Radar (Sea) shall be mounted as standard on all major naval vessels and as an upgrade on the Isles Class cutters and have two rotating antennas,mounted back to back,rotating roughly once every two seconds,to support Medium,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun,Ballistic Artillery Rocket and Twenty Four Inch Torpedo capabilities.


The Medium Range Radar (Land) shall have a single rotating antenna,mounted on a protected trailer in the Royal Marine,Medium Infantry and Light Infantry Divisions or a Cavalry Heavy ARmoured vehicle in the Heavy Cavalry Division,rotating roughly once every two seconds,to support Medium
,Long and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun Howitzer and Ballistic Artillery Rocket capabilities.


The Medium Range Radar (Aeroplane) shall have a single,four foot wide,ovoid antenna rotating about the aircraft's longitudinal axis,mounted in the nose of around one hundred and fifty Furious supersonic long range combat aircraft,forty Perseus patrol aircraft and twenty five Centaurus transport aircraft,to support Medium,Long Range and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Thirteen Inch Torpedo,weather and navigation capabilities.


The Medium Range Radar (Helicopter) shall have a single,eight foot wide and eighteen inches deep,oblong "bolt on" antenna rotating about the aircraft's vertical axis roughly once every two seconds,which may be mounted under the chin of around two hundred Super Merlin and Hermes (Ultra Merlin) helicopters,to support Medium,L
ong and Very Long Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun (or Gun Howitzer),Thirteen Inch Torpedo,Twenty Four Inch Torpedo,weather and navigation capabilities.

The Short Range Radar (Sea) shall have a single small antenna,rotating roughly once every second,integrated on a Stand Alone Defensive System,carried by all major warships,to support Short and Medium Range Multirole Missile,Five and a Half Inch Gun,Twenty Four Inch Torpedo,weather and navigation capabilities.



The Short Range Radar (Land) shall have a single small antenna,rotating roughly once every second,integrated on to a Stand Alone Defensive System,carried by a Cavalry Heavy ARmour family vehicle,to support Short and Medium Range Multirole Missile and Five and a Half Inch Gun Howitzer capabilities.
