During Operation Enduring Freedom,the 2001 bombing of Afghanistan,land based combat aircraft of the United States Air Force operated from bases at Ahmed Al Jaber,Ali Al Salem in Kuwait and Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory.
Coalition aircraft were unable to fly over Iran and so had to go around it,considerably extending the distance to target for aircraft operating from land bases in the Persian Gulf.
Aircraft carriers of the United States Navy were 100 miles off the coast of Pakistan.
